Gender Equality at Sea
This program seeks to ensure equal participation between women and men in decision-making processes to achieve lasting results in marine conservation and sustainable fisheries.

Contributions to the Global Agenda

Guidelines for Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (FAO)

Gender equality at sea supports the Guidelines for Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (FAO) by visualizing and recognizing the roles that women and men play in fishery value chains.

ODS 5. Gender Equality

The Community Leaders Program contributes to the fifth Sustainable Development Goal of the United Nations by encouraging women and men in Latin America to become active proponents of gender equality.

Igualdad de género en las Directrices para la pesca sustentable de pequeña escala (FAO)

The Gender Equality at Sea Program supports the objectives outlined in Chapter 8 of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries.

ODS 14. Life Under the Sea

The Gender Equality at Sea Program seeks to improve marine conservation and sustainable fisheries to mitigate some of the challenges facing our oceans.

The Participation of Women and the Circle of Invisibility

Barriers to the participation of women in the fishing sector:

Strategies

In the Gender Equality at Sea Program, we have collaborated with multiple institutions to promote and encourage equal decision-making by men and women in the fishing and aquaculture sectors.

Check out the strategies we use to achieve our goals.

Community Leaders Program

Women are represented in its implementation

Through their participation in the Community Leaders Program that includes perspectives on gender, the women who participate come to recognize themselves as fishers and not only as assistants to male fishers.

See the reports from the Strengthening Program workshops and learn about their results.

Information Sharing

The participation of women in the fishing sector has begun to be visible.

We have collaborated with dataMares to improve the visibility of women in the fishing sector with stories, infographics, and interactive visualizations.

Have a look and discover what roles women play in the fishing sector in Mexico.

This first exercise invites us to reflect on the information that will ensure that the work of women is visible and valued as well as how to improve statistics in both the primary and secondary sectors.

Proposed Methodology

The participation of women is represented by the numbers.

During 2018, we developed a methodology to evaluate the participation of women in three coastal fisheries in Mexico. While applying this methodology and after its implementation (2019), women and men from the organizations that collaborated in the study have shown an improved recognition of the participation of women in fisheries while giving greater importance to gender equality.

Enjoy the story and infographic that resulted from this effort.

Civics Lab

Mechanisms to promote the participation of women in decision-making are identified and developed.

In September 2018, we held a Civics Lab for Gender Equalitythat was attended by 20 participants from different organizations. The participants collaboratively developed an advocacy strategy to address the problem of the low participation of women in executive, administrative, and technical decision-making areas within fishing organizations.

We are currently working to make our dreams reality.
